Principal's Update

Good morning everyone,

We have had a very busy week at Kingston State School! Please take a moment to have a look at this newsletter as we celebrate our students, their achievements and communicate this with our wider school community.

I have received some very positive feedback in regards to the content in the newsletter.  If there is something that you would like to see more of, please send an email to principal@kingstonss.eq.edu.au with your feedback as to what you would like to see more of.  Please don't forget to complete the School Opinion Survey, if you haven't had a chance to.  The survey opening time has been extended and it will now close on Friday 29th August.

Next year, we are going to be implementing a 'Student Resource Scheme'.  This will mean that parents and carers will have the option to pay a fee to the school instead of filling the booklist requirements.  Many families have expressed that they are happy with this option, as it is convenient for families and can reduce the cost of filling a booklist.  Please keep your eye out for more information coming out shortly.

I also just wanted to pass on another reminder about after school procedures.  We are still having a few students waiting after school in the playground near the Hall.  Students are not supervised at this time.  We will be reviewing this as we move through the term, as well as reviewing the gate closing time.

We also have our Parent Teacher Meetings coming up - please don't miss the opportunity to connect in with your child's teacher!

Reading and writing at home and school

Thank you to the parents that attended our parent information sessions in weeks four and five. It was a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate a phonics lesson to provide further understanding about our reading pedagogy and practical tasks that can be used at home to support your readers.

Remember the strategies that you can use at home with your young reader:

  • As your child reads, you may notice there are words they can read automatically, while other words will need to be ‘sounded out’. When your child comes to a word they do not automatically know, you can help them by saying: ‘Say the sounds as you point to the letters. Now, blend the sounds and read the word.’ For example: for the word ‘hen’, point to the letters and provide the sounds, /h/ /e/ /n/, then blend the sounds to read ‘hen’.
  • If your child still has difficulty reading the word, it’s okay to tell them what the word is. Remember, they are still learning about letters and sounds and may need more practise and support.
  • When your child is learning new letter-sound correspondences, they may read slowly, and it may look laborious. This is typical of beginning readers and is no cause for concern.
  • Remember, practise is key to becoming a skilled reader. Encourage your child to read their decodable texts often and to other family members.

Enrol Now for Prep 2026

If you have a child born between July 2020 - June 2021 they are ready to commence Prep in 2026. Please collect an enrolment pack from the office now to start the enrolment process. We look forward to meeting with you and your child to prepare for Prep in 2026.

Student Celebration

Congratulations to all our students who received Student of the Week certificates this week. We enjoyed celebrating student achievement in reading and wellbeing.

Parent Teacher Meetings

Parent teacher meetings will take place on Tuesday, 2 September 2025 from 3-6pm in the school hall.

Our teachers are looking forward to sharing with you their observations about your child’s academic, social and emotional development and the next steps in their learning journey.

Each interview will be scheduled for 10 minutes. A letter containing information, and a booking link has been emailed to families and can also be found in this week’s newsletter.

Speech Language Pathologist Week

In week seven we celebrate Speech Pathology Week. This is an opportunity to recognise the important role speech pathologists play in supporting students, educational teams, and families to facilitate access and participation for students with speech language and communication challenges. Thank you!

** 2025 Book Week **

This week at Kingston we celebrated Children’s Book Week. The week was full of activities that celebrated reading and the characters and adventures that we all love. The week culminated in our annual Character Parade on Thursday. It was wonderful to see so many of our students dressing up and enjoying the day. Our senior students and their teachers even took part in a game of Celebrity Head: Fairy Tale Edition that resulted in a tie between Miss Tavila and Mr Roffmann.

During lunchtime our students enjoyed drawing their favourite characters, designing badges and book marks and listening to some of our staff’s favourite books.

If you visit the admin building you will be able to see some of the work our students produced to celebrate this year’s shortlisted books. We hope that each of our students made a happy memory from this year’s Book Week.

** HPE Update **

Last Friday 15th of August, 11 of our Kingston State School students attended the Logan Districts Athletics Carnival hold at QSAC. It was a day with warm weather and a vibing atmosphere and great competition. We had Kingston students representing us in long jump, high jump, shot put, 100m and 200m sprints.

Quaver did a remarkable job in Shot Put finishing with an impressive 8.46m throw finishing in the top 10 of all Logan District. Congratulations for that achievement Quaver!

In the 100m heats we had Jahkeem, Ywablut, Summer, Dre, S J, Rosalina, Aston, Chevonta and Eliella. With an impressive personal best of 15.69, Chevonta qualified to the Logan District 100m Final and finished in the top 8 of all Logan Schools at her age level. Congratulations for that achievement Chevonta!

In the 200m heats we had Braxton, Jahkeem, Summer, Dre, Rosalina, Aston , Chevonta and Eliella representing Kingston State School. Jahkeem finished 1st in the 200m heat and qualified to the Logan District Final. The 200m Final couldn’t have been any closer. Jahkeem finished 4th with an impressive 32.51 time, just 00.01 seconds behind the 3rd place. It took the judges multiple reviews of the finish line camera to decide. Congratulations on that achievement Jahkeem!

Finally in high jump, we were represented by Dre and Jahkeem. Dre cleared a jump of 1.10m and finished in the top 10 of the Logan District. Congratulations for that achievement Dre!

As I’m writing this, I’m feeling extremely proud of all 11 students that represented us at the Logan Districts. Now, I did not forget to tell you about Jahkeem’s high jump, but I wanted to save it for last, like a cherry on top kind of thing. Jahkeem finished 1st in the high jump final, clearing an impressive 1.26m jump and qualifying to the Regional Trials! Congratulations on this outstanding achievement Jahkeem! I’m sure you’ll make us proud at Regionals!

To offer some continuity and support to all students, I’ve started offering optional fitness training twice a week during play time for students to get Fitter, Better, Faster, Stronger! This was available in the last two weeks and it was available mainly for students that qualified to districts. Starting from Week 6, this is open to all students Year 4 and above that want to participate.

** Bullying, NO WAY!! *

Bullying, No Way!!!

Last week, the students participated in a number of activities in the classroom and during break times. The focus followed the theme of Be bold. Be Kind and Speak up. The students wrote compliments to each other and made them into compliment chains to wear on the wrists. The classes had bunting to put up in their classrooms. Students explained what Bully, no way meant to them. Some of our Year 6 school leaders spent their lunch breaks with the younger students in completing a kindness bingo card with making new friends and for some of them making another student smile. It was great to see our older students sharing their time to spread care and kindness with our younger students.
