Reading through the Australian Curriculum

How can you help your beginning reader?

As your child reads, you may notice there are words they can read automatically, while other words will need to be ‘sounded out’. When your child comes to a word they do not automatically know, you can help them by saying: ‘Say the sounds as you point to the letters. Now, blend the sounds and read the word.’ For example: for the word ‘hen’, point to the letters and provide the sounds, /h/ /e/ /n/, then blend the sounds to read ‘hen’.

If your child still has difficulty reading the word, it’s okay to tell them what the word is. Remember, they are still learning about letters and sounds and may need more practise and support.

When your child is learning new letter-sound correspondences, they may read slowly, and it may look laborious. This is typical of beginning readers and is no cause for concern.

Remember, practise is key to becoming a skilled reader. Encourage your child to read their decodable texts often and to other family members.

Following on from the video about beginning readers in the previous newsletter, please see the poster below to support your readers at home.

Wellbeing for Learning

Our current wellbeing for learning focus is using the High 5 strategy to teach students how to handle conflicts or challenging social situations.

Students are working to navigate interactions in a respectful, calm, and constructive manner by ignoring, talking friendly, walking away, talking firmly and then reporting if necessary. We encourage you to discuss this with your child/ren at home.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Thank you for attending our parent teacher interviews this week. Our teaching team enjoyed sharing their observations about your child’s academic, social and emotional development and collaborating on the next steps in their learning journey. If you require a further meeting with your student/s teacher, please contact them to book a suitable time.

Year 1 Incursion – My place, Your Place, Our Place

As part of the HASS year 1 curriculum, students will attend an incursion facilitated by Brisbane Urban Environmental Education centre on 2 April 2025.

The students will tour our school grounds identifying different environments. They will survey natural, managed and constructed environments around school and take photos with iPads. They will discuss how these sites have changed and how they can be cared for, and finally produce a field sketch of a site within school where each of these environments can be seen in the one location.

We are excited that the students are able engage in this program. Please ensure students arrive to school on time that day to make the most of this incursion.

Year 3 Excursion - Planetarium

On Wednesday 2 April, our Year 3 students and teachers will be visiting the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and Mount Coot-Tha Botanical Gardens to reflect on knowledge gained throughout their Night and Day science unit.

The aim of the excursion is to observe the Earth’s rotation on its axis, in relation to how our planet orbits the Sun. Students will watch a dazzling space show that launches them through space and time to experience the life and death of the stars in our night sky, including our own nurturing Sun. They will tour familiar stellar formations, explore new celestial mysteries, and discover the fascinating, unfolding story that connects us all to the stars. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg the session concludes with a virtual tour of the Brisbane night sky.

Easter Bonnet Parade

On 3 April, we will be hosting our annual Easter Bonnet parade. Please join us at 9am in the school hall to celebrate the end of term and our wonderful students.

** Year 1 Update **

This term Year 1 students have been exploring the basics of giving and following directions to a location! Through fun, hands-on activities, they practiced using key phrases like "turn left," "go straight," and “go over”. By working together and doing simple role-playing exercises, they built confidence in navigating spaces while improving their communication skills.

** Science Update **

This term our Preps have been learning all about the suitability of different materials for different weather conditions. We have explored what we could decorate a party hat with if we were wearing it on a sunny day, or a rainy day.

Of course, a party hat has to be fun and fabulous!

Online Services Consent Form

As part of our teaching programs, our school utilises tools and resources to support student learning. Some of these resources include online services that are hosted and managed outside the Department of Education.

This week your child will be bringing home an “Online Services Consent” form. This form provides you with details of the websites and apps we use at the school to support student learning. As these are third-party online services, consent is required for your child to be able to use them. To help assist you in your decision to give consent, Privacy Policy and Terms of Use links are given for each resource.

After reviewing this information, please complete the form and return to school. Forms can be handed directly to the office or given to classroom teachers.
